Road approval:

Our EILX trailers are intended for use on public roads. Registration, however, always depends on the respective model, technical vehicle documents, equipment and national requirements of the country of registration.

DE: In Germany, registration is handled by the responsible vehicle registration authority. The vehicle documents, technical data, maximum authorised mass, towing capacity of the towing vehicle and applicable German regulations are decisive.

EU: Within the European Union, registration may require different documents, fees, technical evidence or national inspections depending on the country. Before ordering, please check the requirements of your local registration authority.

Worldwide: Outside the EU, additional requirements such as import inspections, customs documents, technical approvals, translations, national homologation or special proof of insurance may be required. Please clarify these points before export or use outside the EU.

Whether you may tow an EILX with a Category B, B96 or BE licence depends not only on the trailer, but always on the combination of towing vehicle and trailer.

The decisive factors are the maximum authorised mass of the towing vehicle, the maximum authorised mass of the trailer, the permissible towing capacity of the towing vehicle, the nose weight and the actual load.

DE: A Category B licence permits combinations with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kg. In addition, a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of up to 750 kg may be towed with a Category B licence even if the combined total exceeds 3,500 kg. B96 or BE may be required for heavier combinations.

Example for Germany: A trailer with a maximum authorised mass of 1,000 kg may only be towed with a Category B licence if the towing vehicle and trailer together have a maximum authorised mass of no more than 3,500 kg.

EU: EU driving licence categories are generally harmonised. National interpretations, enforcement and special rules may nevertheless differ.

Worldwide: Outside the EU, different driving licence categories, international driving permits or national evidence may be required.

Summary:

Yes. Every EILX that requires registration is supplied with the vehicle documents needed for registration. The exact documents required depend on the model, country of registration and type of approval.

DE: For German registration, we issue a COC/eCOC and a ZB II registration document.

EU: Within the EU, we provide a COC/eCOC for registration. For France, a CNIT number is additionally provided. Registration throughout the EU is generally straightforward.

UK: In the UK, our EILX FOLD models will be approved from 1 September 2026.

Worldwide: For exports outside the EU, additional import documents, customs papers, technical inspections, translations or national homologation may be required. We supply an EU COC with the vehicle.

Depending on the model and technical equipment, many EILX trailers can be prepared or approved for 100 km/h. However, the decisive factor is not only the trailer, but always the entire vehicle combination of towing vehicle and trailer.

DE: Without 100 km/h approval, cars towing trailers in Germany are generally limited to 80 km/h outside built-up areas, on motorways and on roads designated for motor vehicles. With valid 100 km/h approval, the combination may travel at up to 100 km/h on German motorways and roads designated for motor vehicles. On ordinary country roads, the limit generally remains 80 km/h.

Germany – requirements:

• The towing vehicle must be suitable for the combination.
• As a rule, the towing vehicle may have a maximum authorised mass of 3.5 t.
• The towing vehicle must be equipped with ABS.
• The trailer must be technically suitable for 100 km/h.
• The trailer tyres must be approved for at least 120 km/h, meaning at least speed rating L.
• For 100 km/h use, the tyres must not be more than 6 years old.
• The 100 km/h sticker must be affixed to the rear of the trailer.
• The registration certificate or equivalent evidence must confirm suitability.

Germany – unbraked trailers: Auch ein ungebremster Anhänger kann grundsätzlich für Tempo 100 geeignet sein, wenn alle Voraussetzungen erfüllt sind. Wichtig ist aber die Gewichtslogik: Bei ungebremsten Anhängern gilt in Deutschland regelmäßig der Faktor 0,3. Das bedeutet: Das zulässige Gesamtgewicht des Anhängers darf für Tempo 100 höchstens 30 % des Leergewichts des Zugfahrzeugs betragen.

Example for Germany, unbraked: For 100 km/h approval, an unbraked trailer with a maximum authorised mass of 750 kg requires a towing vehicle with a kerb weight of at least 2,500 kg, because 2,500 kg × 0.3 = 750 kg. If the towing vehicle is lighter, the combination is not automatically permitted to travel at 100 km/h even if the trailer itself may be suitable.

Germany – braked trailers: Higher factors are possible for braked trailers with suitable shock absorbers. This can make 100 km/h approval achievable with considerably more towing vehicles. However, the specific vehicle data, tyres, nose weight, towing capacity and registration entry are always decisive.

AT: Different speed regulations apply in Austria. Light trailers up to 750 kg and certain combinations up to 3.5 t may travel at up to 100 km/h depending on the road. Reduced limits apply to heavier combinations.

EU: The German 100 km/h sticker does not automatically constitute approval for all EU countries. Abroad, the national speed regulations of the respective country apply. In some countries 100 km/h is permitted, while in others only 80 km/h or less is allowed.

Worldwide: Outside Europe, separate national rules apply. A German or European 100 km/h approval does not replace local registration or national speed regulations.

Permitted speeds for vehicles towing trailers are not standardised throughout Europe. The applicable traffic signs, vehicle documents, tyre approval, actual weight, type of trailer and national regulations of the destination country are always decisive.

The following overview provides general guidance for cars towing trailers with a combined maximum authorised mass of up to approx. 3.5 t. Local signs, weather, night-time restrictions, novice-driver rules, toll categories or special route regulations may differ.

• DE: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h outside built-up areas/on expressways/motorways, 100 km/h only with valid German 100 km/h approval on motorways and roads designated for motor vehicles.

Load securing is one of the most important aspects of transport. A motorcycle should always be positioned securely, protected against tipping and fastened with suitable tie-down straps to the designated lashing points.

Depending on the EILX model, motorcycle wheel chocks, lashing points and suitable tie-down systems support safe transport. We offer suitable tie-down straps and securing systems from EILZURR for professional load securing.

DE: The load must be secured so that it cannot slip, tip over, roll or fall off, even during emergency braking or sudden evasive manoeuvres.

EU/Worldwide: The basic requirement is similar everywhere: the load must be securely fastened. Inspections and fines can vary significantly by country.

Yes. Depending on the model, loading platform, accessories and load, bicycles or e-bikes can also be transported. It is important to comply with the width, weight, centre of gravity, securing points and permitted payload.

Suitable carriers, brackets or tie-down solutions may be useful for bicycles and e-bikes. The additional weight of heavy e-bikes must be taken into particular consideration.

DE: The load must not obscure the number plate, lights or reflectors. Protruding loads must be marked appropriately depending on the situation.

EU/Worldwide: Marking requirements, permitted overhang, lighting and warning signs may be regulated differently depending on the country. Italy and Spain in particular often have special requirements for loads projecting beyond the rear.

The decisive factors are not only the trailer’s maximum authorised mass, but also the actual load, nose weight, axle load, permissible towing capacity of the towing vehicle and weight distribution.

Incorrect loading can significantly impair handling. Too little or too much nose weight, a centre of gravity that is too high or an unevenly distributed load can cause snaking, longer braking distances or loss of control.

DE/EU/Worldwide: The maximum authorised mass, axle load, nose weight and towing capacity must not be exceeded. Before long journeys or with heavy loads, checking the combination on a vehicle weighbridge is advisable.

Yes, EILX trailers are designed for outdoor use. Galvanised components, robust materials and suitable surface finishes protect the trailer against the weather.

Nevertheless, we recommend regular cleaning and care, especially after journeys involving salt, snow, rain, dirt, sand or coastal air. Moving parts, the coupling, lights, tyres, electrical connections and lashing points should be checked regularly.

Depending on the model, additional finishes such as powder coating or duplex coating may be selected. Powder coating improves the appearance and, when combined with galvanising, can further enhance protection.

DE/EU: Road salt and winter use place particularly heavy stress on metal parts. After winter journeys, the trailer should be cleaned thoroughly with fresh water.

Worldwide: More maintenance is required in coastal regions, very humid climates or areas with high UV or salt exposure. We recommend a duplex coating.

Many EILX trailers are designed to require significantly less storage space than a conventional trailer. Depending on the model, the dimensions may vary when parked or folded.

With a little practice, a folding EILX can be ready for use or stored compactly again within a few minutes. The exact time depends on the model, accessories, surface and the user’s experience.

It is important that the trailer is standing securely when unfolding and folding, is not loaded, the locks are operated correctly and no persons or objects are within the movement area.

DE/EU/Worldwide: Folding or setting up the trailer should only be carried out on a suitable surface and in accordance with the operating instructions.

For EILX FOLD models designed for this purpose, wall mounting is not required. When parked, the trailer stands independently and securely, provided it is set up correctly and placed on a suitable surface.
